Artist's statement

My photographic practice is centred around exploring the convergence of the natural world and cameraless photographic techniques, whereby light,

chemistry and photographic emulsion merge with

materials sourced from nature.

Cameraless photographs are created by manipulating light and/or chemicals to leave an impression on photo-sensitive paper.

This practice has largely been influenced by my personal experiences with cancer.

In these two bodies of work I explored my own experience as well as Kaitlyn’s experience, who is also a brain cancer survivor.

To share my experience with the viewer I combined archival images, portraits, various objects and hybrid techniques to represent the vast side effects and treatments that come with the experience of being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour.

Through this work I hope to raise awareness of the experiences a young person diagnosed with brain cancer will go through and the life altering impacts that are connected with the diagnosis.

Cancer and its treatments are confronting and with my work I hope to encourage understanding and communication rather than allow it to be something we’re not allowed to talk about.
